How Many Gigs Do You Carry?

April 12, 2008

It is amazing how much data we carry around on a daily basis. This could be anything from storage on your cell phone, flash memory on an MP3 player, a laptop hard drive, or a portable gaming memory card.

This got me thinking about a great way to interact with some of the readers of this blog - asking you the reader; How many gigs do you carry everyday? (feed readers click through to give your answer)

To kick things off let me give you my answer: 32gb

1. 2GB memory card in my PDA
2. 30GB in my iPod

Every so often when I travel with a laptop, USB drive, and my camera gear I definitely go over 100gb in just a carry on bag. Pretty incredible when you consider how expensive storage used to be.

My Sponsored Breakfast

February 21, 2008

I came into work this morning much like any other day - except for one glaring difference. My breakfast was sponsored by 3 different companies promoting 3 completely different things. I included this picture below which is the view from where I sit…

Sponsored Breakfast

Continental sponsored my breakfast bag, North Fork bank sponsored the coffee cup, and TBS - Frank TV sponsored my napkin! I joked that I was well on my way to a full CPM impression for each of these folks. Now, I do not blame my coffee stand man on the corner (near Union Square) because he probably has no control over this type of thing. I do however call into question the strategy behind allowing so many different brands to come together to affect my breakfast.

I know there are some cynics out there that will simply say “well, you are writing about the brands so they are getting what they want” and my response is simply: “Yes, this is a marketing blog!” Whoever placed these add buys will be happy I linked to the companies anyways :)

I have a tendency to over analyze the things around me - and my sponsored breakfast is no exception.

All this for $2.00…how many ads before its free?

The Power of Word of Mouth Marketing

March 04, 2008

JG Melons

If you ask anyone in New York City what their favorite burger place is you will get some great answers. Many people believe it is Corner Bistro in the West Village, or perhaps they will claim PJ Clarkes. My personal choice is JG Melons. (see mouthwatering picture above that I took recently)

I have talked about Word of Mouth Marketing before and thought I would present a mini live case study with my own thoughts on the subject.

I wrote up 10 quick WOM checks to see if your product was ready or not for WOM readiness.

But what happens when you apply this logic to a cheeseburger? The same rules apply (minus my tech jargon that I threw in there)

1. Overdeliver
How do you become the best burger place in NY? Simple - make the best burger in New York City.

People want the best. People want to tell their friends they have “had the best”. People also want to tell their friends “here is where you go for the best”.

Word of mouth marketing is not a strategy it should be apparent in the lifeblood of your company. Finding the genuine article is rare. Or maybe medium rare…

Comcast to Acquire Plaxo

May 20, 2008

It was announced today that Plaxo will be acquired by Comcast - or at least they have entered into an agreement for this to happen.

An important piece of the announcement that grabbed my attention:

Plaxo and Comcast have been working together for the past year on a number of initiatives. Plaxo is providing the universal address book for Comcast’s SmartZone communications center (slated to launch later this year), and we are also now hosting all of the address book accounts for Comcast webmail users. Our partnership has already more than doubled the reach of the Plaxo network, bringing the total number of accounts to nearly 50 million.

What does this mean for the Social Networking space? This definitely puts some pressure on those who are looking at certain networks. Although the terms of the deal were not disclosed, I suspect that the price will be the new benchmark for social media net buyouts and be the latest “comp” for comparisons.
